Mission Statement of World Neurosurgery

To create a principal international information conduit for establishing modernity of neurosurgical practice for the global community through contemporary and innovative journalistic communication technologies and channels

To serve as a forum for scientific, clinical, educational, social, cultural, economic, and political ideas and issues for global neurosurgery

To act as a primary intellectual catalyst for the field

To enhance and move toward complete global communication related to all aspects of current and future neurosurgical practice, research, and progress

Given the purpose of representing global neurosurgery's areas of unique issues and accomplishments, it was decided that a formal network of primary advocates and contributors would be established to represent, as completely as possible, all major regions and continents. This Global Associates Group, now numbering nearly 500, comprises notable leaders and contributors throughout the world who will act as the journal's principal information-gathering and advocate group.

From this group, a Senior Advisory Panel composed of approximately 50 senior leaders representing all regions has been assembled. These renowned individuals' charge is to advise the Editor-in-Chief regarding issues of policy and development of the journal.

Next, in an effort to assume global representation and information gathering for content, Continental Editors, knowledgeable luminaries in their regions and the world stage, will serve as primary conduits for their region's special issues, problems, needs, and accomplishments—serving as spokesmen for their continents and regions.

The journal will be highlighted by a multidimensional Features section that will ultimately make up approximately 40% of the journal's content. It will convey topics of social, cultural, political, economic, and educational interest as well as new frontiers and innovations related to clinical, laboratory, and technical neurosurgery. Information related to meetings, events, and publications will be included, along with a highly detailed calendar of important global events. Importantly, this section will publish letters and commentaries from colleagues related to issues of importance in delivery of care and development of our specialty.

The purely peer-review component of the journal will make up approximately 60% of the journal's content. It will be overseen by a global group of Senior Editors, with input from notable senior specialty consultants in areas of cranial base, critical care, endovascular, pain, pediatrics, peripheral nerve, radiosurgery, basic science, spine, sports, stereotactic and functional, trauma, tumor, and vascular. A globally representative group of approximately 60 astute colleagues will make up a Peer-Review Advisory Panel that will advise after multifactorial independent peer-review of manuscripts in a system designed to offer thorough assessment regarding academic process that is edifying to all engaged while reducing bias.

In all components of structure and development, global representation will be stressed and highlighted to achieve an unusual perspective on the field.

Currently, multiple supplements are actively being planned and a robust Web site is in development that will target the presentation of global developments in a real-time basis.

World Neurosurgery, conceived and structured as a universal publishing hybrid, a “maga(zine) journal,” is a highly ambitious enterprise that will rely on global support to achieve its mission. Its presence will signify a historic change in perspective in neurosurgical publishing. The inaugural issue will be the April 2010 issue.
